Help!
I can't remove any items or change settings!
This was a persistent and annoying bug in earlier versions of BuyLater - it will also show up if you remove the extension, before you've deactivated the items you're watching. Simply install the latest version, and then (counter-intuitively), go and ADD a new amazon item. If it sends you a new email, click the verification link in that email. Then you should be able to remove/edit all the items successfully. (Yes, I realize this is ugly. But what happens if you uninstall while you're offline?)
Why is the price in the email higher/lower than what Amazon offers?
BuyLater, by default, will find you the lowest possible price for a "New" condition item (used is coming soon), from any vendor. So when you get to the Amazon page, you may find that Amazon is offering it at a higher price. But you should see a link that looks like this:
That ought to match the price in your email.
With super-saver shipping, Amazon's always cheaper!
A few people pointed this out in bug reports a couple weeks ago - we're now happy to offer you an "Amazon-only" link for each item, which will guarantee you only receive notifications of Amazon-specific prices, and not third-party sellers. You'll find the link below each item on your settings page.
Are you making money from this?
Yes, although it's not much at this point. The links I provide (in emails, twitter messages, and from this website) all contain my Amazon affiliate ID in them, so Amazon (in theory) will pay me a small commission on what you purchase. It doesn't increase what you're paying in any way, so I hope you don't mind.
What countries does it work with?
So far I've got support for the US, Canada, the UK, and Germany. I hope to add France and Japan shortly, although no one has asked for those yet.
What about other e-commerce sites?
I'm working on support for a couple more already, but it's really hard to find an API that can handle being queried every minute for thousands of items. Plus, a lot of the polling is distributed, and some sites don't work very well that way. Which services I build first will really depend on what people want most - what's your vote?
What's this I hear about a 'Bot-Net'?
When you download and install BuyLater, you become part of a massive grid-computer, that's helping all the BuyLater users stay on top of the latest prices. Whenever your browser is running, BuyLater does one polling job every minute, and sends the results back to this server for all the users to share. There's no personal information involved, and it's a pretty moderate amount of bandwidth.
